Mangahao is one of five stations owned by King Country Energy (KCE) and operated by Manawa Energy. The station uses multiple dams to control water levels.
The tail race of the power station has a canoe slalom course managed by Environment White Water Park Trust.
Fish passes have been installed to help with fish migration in the river.
