Matahina Dam Traffic Management

Upcoming lane closures/ temporary speed reductions:

At Matahina Power Scheme, we regularly carry out maintenance and dam safety checks to keep the dam operating safely and reliably for our communities.

To carry out this work safely, we sometimes need to close or partially close Galatea Road across the top of Matahina Dam near Te Mahoe.

Road and lane closures help us keep our team, contractors, and the public safe.

Road closures

Full road closures are notified in advance via Whakatāne District Council, though sometimes we need to change dates or times at short notice due to weather conditions or other factors outside our control.

Road closures often involve crane work to access or move equipment located beneath the road.

When the dam is closed there will usually be a detour in place via Tahuna Rd, Te Teko. Please allow a 15+ minute delay in your travel time.

Lane closures and/or temporary speed reductions

Lane closures or speed reductions across the dam usually mean we’re carrying out routine maintenance such as inspections, clearing of screens in the dam or working on the spillway to keep everything running safely.

Emergency works

In an emergency, we may close or partially close the road at any time to carry out urgent work that protects the dam and downstream communities.

Minimising disruption
We know road closures can be inconvenient and make every effort to minimise disruption. Wherever possible, we share information early to help you plan ahead.
