This scheme comprises three stations – Duffers, Dillmans and Kumara. It is key to ensuring reliable electricity supply to the West Coast. It collects water from the Big Wainihinihi and the Arahura catchments with inflows ending up in the Kawhaka catchment.

Recreational activities in the area include fishing, power boating on the sheltered reservoir, kayaking, tramping and rock fossicking.

There is a native fish pass at the Kawhaka intake.
