Hinemaiaia was originally developed to provide electricity for Taupō. It consists of three power stations, Hinemaiaia A, B and C.

The scheme includes protected wetlands and production trout spawning areas. There is a comprehensive trout trap and transfer programme each year releasing around 200 trout and 35,000 fry above the Hinemaiaia B Dam.
