Kaniere Forks Power Station is one of the oldest in New Zealand and the historic Kaniere Water Race Walkway is shared with the public and the Department of Conservation. McKays Creek Station was built to supply power to local gold mining operations.

Lake Kaniere is popular for boating, fishing and swimming. Manawa Energy partners with Fish and Game New Zealand to improve stocks of trout in Lake Kaniere and improve fish passage through the Kaniere River.
