The original Mangorei Power Station was constructed in 1904 to supply power for street lighting and to 41 customers in New Plymouth. The current station, completed in 1931, included what was at the time, the highest earth dam in Australasia and created Lake Mangamahoe. The lake doubles as the drinking water reservoir for the New Plymouth District Council, and is a well-used local recreational facility.

There is a fish pass at the intake weir on the Waiwhakaiho River and a trap and transfer programme for eels during the migration season. Since the programme began over 400,00 migrating elver have been transferred upstream.

Manawa Energy has lodged an application with Taranaki Regional Council for resource consent to continue operations at Mangorei. For more detailed information about the scheme, click here.
