Wahapo Power Station, formerly called Okarito Forks, makes use of the natural storage of Lake Wahapo. The current scheme was redeveloped in the 1990s. Wahapo plays a vital role in ensuring reliable electricity supply to South Westland.

A fish pass helps trout, salmon and native species swim past the weir to upstream spawning grounds.
